Three hundred and forty-seven years ago, planet Orange was settled by refugees from across the Juicy Way. They had sent robotic “Vessy” probes in every direction to gather information about distant worlds before selecting their new home. In the present day, while conducting research for a documentary about these probes, an astrohistorian notices that one robot lost contact shortly after entering orbit around its target planet. The preliminary citric acid readings transmitted by VES-0463 were too low to support life as understood by pre-exodus science. One cryptic line of the centuries-old report catches her eye: “May have initiated Project Seed.” Probably because resources were already stretched thin in those days, there was no follow-up investigation...until now.
Following public interest in her findings, especially with the modern knowledge that the planet’s chemistry does NOT preclude life, the scientific research megacorporation known as Proton Labs assembles a team of unpaid interns to embark on a grand expedition/publicity stunt. Their mission: to locate the robot (or what’s left of it), determine why it lost contact, and collect environmental data about the planet.
