about

The Pomerian Cultural Preserves Foundation is proud to present a newly-restored video game soundtrack as part of this month’s quincentennial Vessel Day celebrations. Super Forbidden Fruit was a religious criticism platformer published in the year 135 A.E. by lone developer Dante Appleghieri. In the game, the player travels through and destroys the 5 segments of hell and the garden of paradise located in the core of the planet. The cartridge and manual used for this restoration were graciously donated by the Russet family, whose ancestors retrieved the partially-burned items from the ashes of a bonfire during the Purging of 155.

Historical context:
Significant technological progress had been made under the direction of The Vessel, the offworlders who communicated through it, and the late Rosa III. However, Pomerian science began to stagnate in the early 2nd century of the Ascendant Era. Appleghieri attributed this stagnation to the Church of the Mother and its increasing efforts to condemn Vessel-derived knowledge as heretical. He believed the church maintained its influence by weaponizing the fear of eternal punishment after death, and he was determined to uproot that fear through cathartic fictional violence against the concept of the afterlife.

Numerical symbolism:
Appleghieri makes extensive use of the numbers 3 and 5, both musically and visually. Each level’s main theme either makes use of quintuple meter or otherwise divides its segments into fives -- both techniques frequently employed in traditional Motherist hymnal music to signify the Mother’s five children (after whom the moons, terrestrial features, pockets of hell, and more were named). However, the arrangements used during the destruction sequences swap the fives for threes -- a number which gained significance due to the superficial resemblance between The Vessel’s model number (VES-0440) and the Old Cydonian word for the number 3.
